# Repair a probe connection

> Separate USB discovery, debug transport and device compatibility.

A visible USB adapter proves enumeration, not SWD/JTAG connectivity or device support. A serial console can work while the debug interface is unavailable.

Check power/reference voltage, cable, driver permissions and selected probe identity. Confirm the transport and device configuration supported by the backend. For multiple probes, select explicitly.

If an OpenOCD target is unknown, supply the correct native configuration. Do not substitute a demo target. If symbols fail after connection, verify the ELF rather than changing probe wiring.

Reset-under-connect can help specific boards, but must follow the vendor recovery procedure. Protection changes and full erase can destroy data; use them deliberately, with a recovery plan.
